The University Library is celebrating Open Access Week, October 19-25! This year’s theme, “Open with Purpose” is all about taking action to build structural equity and inclusion in scholarship and academic publishing. We know that this semester has us all Zooming more than ever, and so we have planned a predominantly asynchronous program of informative videos, activities, and social media to provide you the opportunity to learn more about open access at your leisure.

Visit our Open Access Week 2020 guide, which will provide links to all the content we’re providing for you this year. And follow the University Library on our social media accounts for daily updates! (Instagram: @csudhlib, Facebook: /CSUDHLibrary, and Twitter: @CSUDHLib).

As always, if you have any questions about open access, please feel free to contact either your liaison librarian or the Digital Initiatives Librarian Dana Ospina (dospina@csudh.edu), and we’ll make sure you get the information you need!

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Black Lives Matter Wikipedia Edit-a-thonStudents, faculty, staff, and the CSUDH community are all welcome to participate, but space is limited. The event will begin at 3:00 PM on November 5 with a brief introduction to bias in “neutral” spaces, fact checking, and adding citations and editing items in Wikipedia, with a special focus on articles related to the BLM movement. Librarians will be available to provide guidance and answer any questions while attendees edit. Stay as long as you like to contribute to this project! Faculty, we would appreciate you mentioning this opportunity to your students.

Participants need to register for the Edit-a-Thon in advance. Registration is limited to 25 participants and will close at 11:59 PM November 4 (a Zoom link will be shared with those who register).

Elsevier Science Direct Gold OA Pilot

Are you a corresponding or sole author for an article accepted by an Elsevier Science Direct journal between January 2020 and December 2021?

If so, you may be eligible to publishing open access at no cost to you! The Gold Open Access pilot program is part of the most recent contract negotiated between the CSU and Elsevier.

The CSU Libraries Network has provided information on how to determine your eligibility. Elsevier has also provided a video outlining the steps you would take to take advantage of this option. You will be asked to authenticate as a CSU affiliate to access the video.

If you have any questions after reviewing the materials, please contact Dana Ospina (dospina@csudh.edu), Digital Initiatives Librarian.

Have you checked out our new database, Scopus?

Scopus search interface.

Scopus is a "citation index" meaning that while it doesn't always have the full-text to resources it is a very comprehensive index of the latest and greatest research in health, science, social science, and select humanities disciplines. Its resources come from over 5,000 distinct academic publishers and total over 22,000 journals, books, and conference papers. When we say comprehensive - we mean comprehensive! As with any index, if you don't see the full-text in the database you're searching using the "Find it at CSUDH" button to track it down.

Scopus also updates its index weekly (and sometimes daily!) which makes it perfect to keep up with the latest research by setting automated alerts for a particular author, search term, publication, or other search criteria.

Set up alerts

  1. Create an account using your CSUDH email address
  2. Conduct a search
  3. Above the Search results, click bell logo in Scopus Set alert
  4. Enter your email address and select the frequency for your alerts

Find CSUDH Publications

Our favorite feature in Scopus is seeing all the great work published by CSUDH faculty and students indexed. Explore on your own what CSUDH authors have written by using the "Affiliation" search option in the dropdown menu.

Already in 2020, CSUDH researchers have 55 publications indexed in Scopus! Of these publications, 12 are made available to the public through open-access publishing and cost nothing to the reader expanding the reach of CSUDH research around the world.

Here are a few of those articles:
