This collection contains stamps, stickers, labels, cards, and other ephemera produced by socialist and communist organizations and labor unions in the United States. The bulk of the materials in this collection are stamps from fundraising, boycott, and strike actions. Highlights include stamps and campaign cards from the International Workers of the World, stamps from the International Labor Defense, stamps and ephemera from the Continental Congress of Workers and Farmers, and stamps from the International Workers Order.
California Labor Federation AFL-CIO Collection (circa 1927-2021; undated)
This collection contains convention booklets and leaflets, voter information fliers, training manuals, organization constitutions, and other materials that provide insight into the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO.
This collection contains material collected and written by John M. Weatherwax such as correspondence, manuscripts, essays, film treatments, research notes, pamphlets, leaflets, flyers, programs, mailers, and other documents. Material authored by Weatherwax includes drafts of manuscripts, essays, novellas, articles, radio transcripts, and film treatments; as well as notes, revisions, and related research material. Collected material is from organizations such as American Committee for Protection of Foreign Born, National Federation for Constitutional Liberties, Los Angeles Committee to Secure Justice for the Rosenbergs, Alameda County Labor Party, Communist Party of Los Angeles, Socialist Labor Party, and other organizations, groups, and publications focused on sociopolitical issues. This collection includes American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and CSU Academic Senate materials belonging to Robert Comegys, a Fresno State history professor. Materials include: organizational papers including AAUP position papers; newsletters; correspondence; bulletins; news clippings; reports; and conference papers.
This collection contains records of Roy Pearson, labor representative for the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America, or IUMSWA, from the War Manpower Commission, and other miscellaneous organizations. Materials include: meeting agendas; meeting minutes; memorandums; correspondence; letters; press releases; employment statistics; pamphlets; postcards; reports; and handbooks.
United Farm Workers Ephemera Collection, 1968-2003; undated
This collection contains photographs, flyers, articles, pamphlets, vinyl records, a flag, a poncho, buttons, stickers, stamps, and a mailer regarding United Farm Workers (UFW) and Cesar Chavez and is mostly related to boycotts that occured in the late 1960s through the early 1970s in support of farmworkers. Also included are documents both in favor of and in opposition to Proposition 14, the farm labor initiative, a 1976 ballot initiative sponsored by Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers of America; photographs taken at Cesar Chavez's memorial service; and material related to farm workers such as a "California Farm Workers" brochure and Student Committee on Agricultural Labor broadside. Some of the material in this collection were featured as part of the Gerth Archives and Special Collections 2018 exhibit entitled "¡Adelante! Latinx Activism in California".
Women at Work Collection, circa 1900-1960
The Women at Work Collection (circa 1900-1960) contains 39 black-and-white photographs (mostly postcards) featuring women working as telephone operators, a wrestler, mill workers, beauty salon operators, secretaries, farm workers, entertainers, and other occupations. Included in this collection are images of Gene Stratton-Porter (writer and silent film producer) Clementine Compton (singer), Conchita Cintron (bullfighter), Kathi Gultini (juggler), and Valentini Tereshkova (Russian cosmonaut).
Holt Labor Library Collection
The Holt Labor Library was a library in San Francisco from 1992 to 2019 that collected and made accessible primary and secondary source material related to labor history and the history of the radical left, with an emphasis on the activities of American Trotskyist political organizations. The Library also collected materials related to various anti-war movements, the women's movement, gay liberation, the African American Civil Rights Movement, among other social justice causes.
