Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan Services are limited to registered students, faculty, emeritus faculty, and staff of CSUDH.

Loan Period

To ensure that you receive your requested material on time, please submit requests at least two weeks before you need the materials.

Loan periods for Interlibrary Loan items are determined by the lending library. The average loan period is approximately two to three weeks.

To request a renewal of your Interlibrary Loan material, you must select the "request renewal" option under your ILL account. Renewals can not be processed manually by ILL staff.

Students may have a maximum of 5 items out at any one time through Interlibrary Loan, Faculty may have 12. The limit applies to any combination of Books and Articles.

Items Available for Loan

The following items can usually be requested via Interlibrary Loan:

  • Books
  • Some dissertations and theses
  • Journal articles

Interlibrary Loan items may not be borrowed in order to put on the reserves desk or be put to similarly long-term use.

The following items can not be requested via Interlibrary Loan:

  • Titles owned by the CSUDH Library - if an item you want is checked out, you can place a hold on it at the circulation desk
  • Most textbooks - most libraries place their textbooks on reserves counters, which means they cannot be loaned out
  • Most recently published books - Books published within the current calendar year are often not available through Interlibrary Loan. They newer the book, the fewer libraries will own it, and many libraries will not loan out very new books to other Libraries.
  • Some dissertations and theses - due to copyright restrictions placed by the authors
  • Entire issues of periodicals such as scholarly journals - please request the individual article that you require
  • Reference materials, rare books, archival materials
  • Audiovisual materials
  • Software, hardware, and eBooks

Fees and Charges

There are usually no fees associated with borrowing materials through Interlibrary Loan. However, if a library does charge for the service, you will be notified before you the request is approved.

Late Fees for overdue Interlibrary Loan books are $1 per day.
